Silent new Sunday: Real weather in Dubai

Dubai's Burj Khalifa in cloudy weather
As we continue to get used to our Sat-Sun weekend, I’d like to welcome you to a new Sunday series on life in the Big D. Dubai is a city I’ve recently heard described as the Milton Keynes of the Middle East, or Asia’s Skegness, but I hope you’ll agree the place is really quite special. Here’s the Burj Khalifa reflected in full Sunday glory, photographed from Al-Quoz pond park.

Silent Sunday: Capture the Colour

This post is my entry to a photo blogging contest! Over at Travel Supermarket, they’re inviting bloggers to showcase their five favourite travel photos that best capture the colours red, blue, green, yellow and white. Having just spent a fun evening trawling through my still-to-be-organised, sprawling collection of images, these are my top picks:

RED: Ali Baba store in Baku, Azerbaijan

RED: Ali Baba store in Baku, Azerbaijan

BLUE:

BLUE: Beautiful boy at Jebel Ali, Dubai (peacocks also roam freely outside Zabeel Palace, home of Dubai’s ruler)

GREEN:

GREEN: Rolling mist over Snowdonia in North Wales

YELLOW:

YELLOW: Enjoying a quiet moment with my eldest son, with the Hajar Mountains (marking the UAE-Oman border) in the background

WHITE: Faraya, Lebanon (who knew there were ski resorts in the Middle East?

WHITE: First time seeing real snow for my little (not so sure) boy, at Faraya, Lebanon. Who knew there were ski resorts in the Middle East?

The rules also state that I need to nominate five fellow bloggers who might be interested in taking part. So, without much further ado, here are five blog friends whose travel photos I’d love to see if they fancy entering:

Good luck everyone!

Silent Sunday: Summer camp

Camp has got to be one of the greatest inventions known to mumkind, especially in countries where the summer vacation goes on…and…on. This camp, I’m not so sure about, however. At Happy Camp, participants should maintain a general sense of anxiety at all times:

Thank you to Nina at Francey Pants for this photo.

Silent Sunday: Garden safari

I really hope everyone’s having a lovely summer. We’re heading back to the desert soon and so I’m making the most of all the greenery before we leave. Here are a few of my snaps, including some details from my green-fingered mother’s garden. In a week’s time, I’ll feel like I’ve landed on another planet!

Note: Big white bird included on the request of Son1 who seems to have invented a new game, Angry Swans.

Silent Sunday: Rustic charm

There was an old woman who lived in a …. barrel? I know it should be shoe, but when I saw this photo – taken by my mother-in-law in Lebanon – it really reminded me of the nursery rhyme. Gives a new meaning to the phrase rolling countryside…

Lebanon barrel house

And, in reply to the lovely Ms Caroline in Seoul, who just pointed out that it looks like a hobbit house without grass on top, it is all real-sized. I cropped the photo above – here’s the original, with three cars parked outside!

Satellite dish too, I wonder!

Am wondering if there’s a satellite dish and Wi-Fi too!

Silent Sunday: Online shopping

Thought fashion endorsements were the realm of supermodels and celebrities? Not any more. If you just happened to be looking for an Afghan hat, you might stumble across this website selling them. This was a tricky one to photograph, and in case you can’t read the tagline, it says: “Original Wool Afghan hat as seen on TV worn by the Taliban!”

Thank you to my friend, who came across this while researching the name of the hat worn by Afghan men for an article (pakol, in case you wanted to know)

Silent Sunday: For meat-eaters only

If you’re vegetarian, click away now! Still here? Then this week’s Silent Sunday is a photo of something I bought in our local supermarket at the weekend. I wasn’t sure if the ‘Cheep! Cheep!’ label on it was trying to tell me it was the best-value chicken in the store, or if it was a ‘sound effect’ to go with the ‘too-real-for-my-liking’ package design. Either way, I felt sorry for the bird!

Admits: My kids are still learning that chickens don't look like a chicken nugget, so this at least should help

Silent Sunday: Gone fishing

Brothers are the best, especially when it comes to activities like fishing. My DH’s brother lives in Dubai, too, and when we all get together, I love stepping back and watching them all ‘be boys’ together.

This was taken at a place we’ve named Cat Beach, because there’s a colony of cats living – quite happily – on the rocks, feeding on the fish thrown to them by visiting fishermen. Someone fell in two minutes after I took this - not who you think!

Silent Sunday: Winter in the UAE

Inviting, no? But this is what our pool looks like on a winter morning – deserted! It was a chilly 10 degrees centigrade at 7am today. Brrr! I took this photo at about 10.30am, as the temperature was rising (it’ll hit 24 degrees or so) – and noticed that the lifeguard was wearing a wooly hat!

xxxxxxxx

The hot weather we’re used to thins your blood, you know…
